Vegetable Garden June 22 (Week 14)

Garden's looking great! We have a ton of snappeas and lots and lots of zucchini blossoms. (Fried zucchini blossoms are one of my very favorite summer treats.) Also got our first zucchini, and our first cherry bomb pepper (but it's still green, so I'm waiting on it). Some deer have been nibbling on the tomato and zucchini plants, which has never happened, so I sprayed extra deer spray on. Hopefully this week they'll be okay.

Week 17

When I got out to Southampton last Friday, I was happy to see my garden had exploded! I guess all that hot weather really helped. The tomatoes are like 6 1/2 feet high! It's like a forest. Everything is looking healthy and happy, and we even had our first tomatoes! The black cherries, mini orange, and striped tigerella had a few that were ready. So delicious.
Here it is from the side. See how tall those tomatoes are? It's crazy!
This is one of the big Japanese Trifeles. There are like 10 more on the bush.

Vegetable Garden Week 14

Hello! Another garden update. Everything looks good and we had more snap peas than ever. We still haven't finished eating them! I also had some beets and made beet chips - super tasty. And made our first fried zucchini blossoms of the season. More below.

Vegetable Garden Week 20

May garden was looking a litle downtrodden last weekend with the deer and all of the hot sun, but it looked a lot better this weekend. The Swiss Chard came back and there were lots of tomatoes and a big eggplant. There are a few little jalapenos growing and some zucchini that will probably be the perfect size next week. There was a beautiful yellow brandywine tomato that still had to ripen a bit, but I picked it to ripen in the city off the vine because I was afraid it would fall off during the week. I may make more Babaganoush with my big eggplant because it was so tasty last time, although I'm tempted to grill it too because it's so fresh and sweet. We had some Swiss Chard sauteed with garlic and chorizo last night - with a drizzle of maple syrup - and some crispy fried zucchini blossoms. Also some great August corn (not from my garden, but really really fresh and tasty).

Fried Zucchini Blossoms

This may be my favorite summer hors d'oeuvres - it's crispy and light and flavorful and just tastes like summer. It's also pretty. You can actually often find zucchini blossoms at the Union Square Green Market, but I picked these from my garden. (Don't pick too many or you won't get any zucchini!) The light batter makes the flowers fry up to be crispy but not at all heavy. Some people stuff the blossoms with ricotta or mozzarella etc, but I think they're perfect plain. If you can get some zucchini blossoms, try this!! They're amazing.
Ingredients:
zucchini blossoms, with one slit made down the side
